When you look at whatвЂ™s going on, we actually have an ADR (attack, decay and release) envelope with the Decay knob controlling both decay and release, although sonically it wont make huge amounts of difference. These control our amplitude envelope of our voices. Starting off with the top left and middle left we have two knobsВ for Attack and Decay. In green IвЂ™ve highlighted the remaining controls. WeвЂ™re also just focusing on the вЂAвЂ™ view, which is the sound generation bit, while the вЂBвЂ™ view is a reverb unit. TheyвЂ™re quite pretty but donвЂ™t really contribute to the functionality of the ensemble so I wont be dealing with them any further than this. They display the volume (in white, on the left) and the position within the stereo spectrum (blue, on the right) of the 96 voices. There are two graphic displays to get out of the way first.

It generates white noise tones that are pseudo-randomly band-pass filtered, given an amplitude envelope shape and spread across the panoramic spectrum. To simplify this a little, SpaceDrone is a 96 (yes, ninety-six!) voice synthesiser.

SpaceDrone generates atmospheric pads which range from light rain or howling windВ noises to deep and uncanny space sounds.В Technically, the instrument is based on 96 parallel voices spread acrossВ the frequency spectrum.В Each voice consists of a noise generator the signalвЂ™s amplitude is shaped by an envelope, its frequency content gets modified by a bandpass filter, and finally itВ gets positioned in the stereo field. This is what ReaktorвЂ™s blurbВ has to say about it: SpaceDrone is a self-playing ensemble, creating sounds ranging from lush, ethereal ambient soundscapes, not dissimilarВ to the weird and wonderful noises captured by NASA of other planets and moons,В cold industrial tones, insect-like chattering and sounds that wouldnвЂ™t be out of place in a Andrei Tarkovsky film. Most interestingly itвЂ™s actually a quite simple machine when you peek at whatвЂ™s behind the curtain. Whilst IвЂ™m still not quite au fait with the monstrously complex Skrewell, SpaceDrone is a neat tidy little unit capable of some beautiful sounds without too much work.

Similar to the Dual mode, but with reversed grains, for a smoother pitch shifting sound. This results in a smoother pitch shifting sound than the Single mode.

SingleReverse, where each grain is reversed before it is pitch shifted.

Dual, where the feedback is shifted both up and down (in parallel) by the Shift value.

Single, where the feedback is shifted up or down by the Shift value.

In addition, ValhallaShimmer has the ability to pitch shift the feedback signal.

Two tone controls and the Color Mode selector allow the timbre to be adjusted from bright and glistening to a more natural dark decay, similar to that produced by air absorption in large spaces.

The modulation controls can be set to produce subtle mode thickening, glistening string ensemble-esque decays, and the distinctive random modulation of the older Lexicon hall algorithms.

By adjusting the Feedback, Diffusion and Size controls, the attack, sustain and decay of the reverb signal can be fine tuned.

There are several reverberation modes available, to allow the user to dial in reverb decays of different sizes, ranging from smaller rooms to vast ambiences: At the same time, the algorithm has been highly optimized, so you get a huge reverb sound without straining your CPU.ДЄt its core, ValhallaShimmer is a high quality reverberator, designed to produce a smooth decay, that is both dense and colorless.
